Part 2 the Person of the Son

Part 2, The Person of the Son.

As we continue this chapter we may have one or two more parts in order to keep the reading short enough to finish at one sitting.  I know most folks have responsibilities and we want everyone to have an opportunity to read without distraction these wonderful words of our Creator!

In the previous article of Hebrews Chapter 1, The Person of the Son, we covered Verses 1-3. In this part we will hopefully cover more verses!

Hebrews 1: 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

The word "better" is used 13 times in this book of Hebrews! It is only used 19 times in the entire New Testament!

Lets look at some of the "betters" in hebrews!

Hebrews 1:4 better than angels

Hebrews: 6: 9 better things

Hebrews: 7.7 better person than Abraham

Hebrews: 7: 19 better hope

Hebrews: 7: 22 better covenant

Hebrews: 8: 6 better promises & better covenant

Hebrews: 9: 23 better sacrifices

Hebrews: 10: 34 better possession

Hebrews: 11: 16 better country

Hebrews: 11: 35 better resurrection

Hebrews: 11: 40 & 12: 24 better things

How wonderful to be exalted by seeing all the better things God has for His Son and those who love him!

The Apostle Paul draws on this same word "better" in Philippians 1:23, when he said, "For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:"

The Jewish people held angels in high regard! We recall, the law was ordained by angels at Sinai. They held them in great awe and admiration. These were messengers of God and were given great power. John was so overcome by the angel in Revelation 19:10 and 22: 8-9 that he fell before him to worship him! Our Savior is exalted here above all the angels!

We see him becoming a little lower than the angels as he became flesh and blood in the form of man for a little while. What a statement, God, made a little lower than the angels! Now, the Son has been seen to be exalted above these heavenly messengers!  For all eternity they look to and worship Him!

This was the Son of man set before us as the very image of the Father!  This is the one who God has chosen to speak through, not angels.

God has now spoken and declared his Son as, better than angels!

Ch 1: 5, 7 They are His servants, he is the Son of God!

Ch 1: 6 He is to be worshiped by them!

Ch 1: 8 He is God!

Ch 1: 8 He is King!

Ch 1: 9 He loved righteousness and hated iniquity, therefor God has anointed with the oil of gladness above His fellows!

Ch 1: 10 He is Lord!

Ch 1: 11, 12 He shall continue for ever! The heavens shall pass away but you continue, you are the same; your years shall not fail!

No one else in all of scripture is exalted as The Son is!

By his sacrifice and complete obedience to the Father he is now sitting at the right hand of the Father in his priestly position! He has taken the position above the angels as this belonged to him as Son from eternity to eternity!  He is become the one mediator between man and God!

"Being made so much better"....

When we look at this statement, because of the "so much" included here, not just "better" but "so much better", we see a span that cannot be compared.  The distance is un comparable between the Son and the angels or any other creature that God created. He is the Son from everlasting to everlasting!  Although he became lower than the angels for a short time in the flesh, he never at any time was less than God!

Now we come to the place where God gives seven Old Testament statements to confirm this declaration of Christ greatness above the angels!

These Hebrews were very familiar with these preceding verses and knew them by heart! This was their religion and these words would help them understand the greatness of the Son!

Verse 5. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

The deity of Christ is spread before us in this verse! His greatness and importance!

The angels are created beings subject to judgement just like man! The scripture teaches that the fallen angels will be judged as well!  Created beings! Created as servants, ministering to Christ and man!

No angel was ever address in this manner of majesty! There are places that refer to angels and men as sons but not after this manner. This Son was from everlasting to everlasting.

Which angel or man ever had the power to raise themselves from the dead or over-rank their creator? The fallen angels tried but were cast out into the earth to await a later judgement for their sins!

Through His resurrection, he was declared the Son of God with power!

This statement does not lend itself to when he was called this but that he was and that no angel was ever addressed as such!

David was promised a Son, the throne of Whose Kingdom He would establish forever! One from Davids own household who would inherit his throne forever!

The Son of David, the Son of God! This relationship of God and man,.... how can we fully understand it? We can't! Our minds cannot comprehend who the Son is in his fullest in his relationship with man!  We can only understand the parts that are revealed to us! This side of the Kingdom, we will never fully understand Him! This is a mystery that only faith can receive!

Lets look to Matthew 11: 27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

In the first chapter of Hebrews, Gods knowledge of the Son is set directly before us!

He is seen before the incarnation and constantly in scripture afterwards. He is declared to be, the Son of God with power.  According to scripture, by the resurrection from the dead! This is the Son Paul preached in Romans 1:4!

Verse 6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

What a glorious revelation! He brings in the firstbegotten or Firstborn!  This is a title not a description! The firstbegotten or firstborn who was with God in the beginning!

As the Firstborn arrives, the angels are sent to worship him!  "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men". Giving glory to Him who is the Firstborn of many brethern.

Verse 7. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. (A quote from Psalms 104: 4 also.)

Just a couple of scripture here as we all should have some understanding of this verse.  In Daniel, when he began to pray to the Father, God sent or dispatched an angel the day he began praying. This angel was a messenger, and he hew was delayed by the Prince of Persia! The angel of God, Gabriel was sent to him for his relief.  In the garden we see the angels coming to Jesus and ministering to him there.

In the book of Revelation, we see the angels given power over the land, waters and sun!  All these magnificent creatures are beneath our Lord Jesus in honor and glory!

Verse 8. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Looking into verse 8. Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever:.  Here we see the Father addressing the Son as God!  There are no degrees in deity.  All are as one and one as all. When you see the one, you have seen the other.

John 5: 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

The Jews understood what Jesus was saying in this statement that God was his Father. Meaning, He had come directly from God, making himself equal to God!  He was and is God!  This we have to come to terms with!

As a man, Christ has been exalted above all mankind!  there are no kings, or royalty that hold the position He has received of the Father because of his obedience to righteousness and hatred of iniquity!

In the end of this age, at His coming, He will be known as Lord of Lords and King of Kings! All will bow before Him to worship him upon His throne! He will rule in the mist of His enemies, because God, his God has anointed Him with the oil of gladness above all before and around Him!

Hebrews 10-14

10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;

12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

In verses 10-12 we are drawn to the sharp contrast of the eternal existence of Christ and the passing away of the heavens and the earth. Thou remainest or continue without end and they perish!  How foolish scientist are to look to the great expanse of the heavens and depend on them to endure for eternity and remain for them!  They will perish as the scripture say.

As a vesture or change of clothing that has become unwearable from age and wear, they will be rolled up and put away, and then be exchanged for a new garment! This is the picture I think is in this! Not necessarily a reconstruction and in remodeling a home but as in tearing the old home completely down to the foundation and building a brand new one separate from the old! It has the same foundation but a brand new construction!

This is the picture I get when I read this scripture. This present evil age will pass with all it's unrighteousness and be replaced with Christ being the foundation that was laid from the beginning and will remain form eternity to eternity. All things will be brand new as a new garment of clothing!

Please read regularly the last two chapters of Revelation. These chapters tell us tat the heavens and earth fled away and there was no place found for them. They fled from Him who set upon the throne!  it is the one upon the throne who has declared, I will make all things new!

They shall perish but you remain!  This is another sharp contrast to Christ and the creation!  Christ as God, remains forever! Man in all his glory will change. His days are numbered upon this earth and he will perish in his sin if he does not come to God in repentance with a sorrowful, broken heart. He will not remain the same.

Even those who have come to Christ and have their hope in him will change! We as believers will be raised anew! If we remain until his coming, we will be changed in the twinkling of an eye and take on His form and being.  Blessed be the name of our God forever! Bless His Holy Name!  All things, nothing excluded is dependent upon the creator!

In verse 13 God calls attention directly to the angels again!  To which of these angels has God said at any time, Sit here on my right hand,?  Throughout all scripture we cannot find this mentioned!  There is no hint that god ever intended angels to be more than the ministering servants they are. I am not trying to take away anything from the created angels but yet we must establish that God never created them to nor intended for them to rule!

The Jews, Romans and many Gentiles held angels in high regard as many even declared them as gods!  We shall see in the end of this age as the scripture here declares, God will set the Son as King and Ruler as He places His enemies beneath his feet!  He, the creator and upholder of all things will be King of Kings and Lord of Lords!  God has declared this!

When Christ comes back to this earth, He will meet with great opposition as described in the book of revelation!  Satan has rallied the Kings of the earth to stand with him in his opposition of the Christ!  Surely, we see this in this verse! The world is not conforming to the better but tot he worse!

Verse 14, Ministering spirits and heirs of salvation. Here God calls to attention a contrast between angels and man in a way never seen before. The created angels who have been reserved from sin who cannot understand the reasoning of God toward men are continually and with joy, ministering to his creation. How can this be? How can this thing be? We have become objects of great value in the eyes of God through the death of His dear Son!

Lets look at this wonderful verse in Hebrews 1: 11 again, "For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of oneThese sons he brings to glory with him are so connected with Him that this was written!

There is a measureless difference between ministering and salvation! Angels minister, men are born into the kingdom of God and become heirs and joint heirs with Jesus Christ Himself! We are the inheritors of salvation through him who has loved us!

Having made propitiation for sins, setting down at the right hand of the Majesty on High, becoming so much better than the angels as He has inherited a better name than they. These sons He brings to glory are all of one!

As we close this first chapter, lets remember, no angel was ever set in the presence of God as having been recognized as having his enemies put under his feet as a footstool.

Believers in Christ are heirs of salvation! What a marvelous thought and revelation God has given us through His spirit! As inheritors of this wonderful gift, angels are continually ministering to our needs. But to remember the purpose of this entire chapter, God's Son is heir of all things, God, Lord, Creator, and Upholder of it all.
