Psalms 2 Why do the heathen rage?

In this time we are living in we see more and more people becoming angrier and angrier! Politics are getting out of control as parties square off against each other with a vengeance like I have never seen before!

Psalms 2Groups or protesters of everything under the sun are formed and march against anything and everything! Violence almost always follows these crowds!  Anger and rage are a staple in today’s society! Sad to say, we have become used to it and it no longer surprises us and in some cases, it doesn’t even offend us anymore.

So, why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing? In this passage of Psalms 2 we find the answers as God declares His Son!

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,

Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

1 Psalms 2, Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing?

Their father is of this world and the god of this world, the prince of the power of the air has darkened their hearts with hatred and bitterness against anything that is of God!

It is of the nature of the heathen to rage and the followers of them to imagine vain things in their hearts!

John 12:40

He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

V 2. “They banded themselves against the Lord, and against his Anointed.”

Why did they band themselves against God’s anointed?

  • To have his goods?
  • To have his liberty?
  • To bring the people unto dislike of him?
  • What would they have, then?

His Blood! This is what the heathen had in his heart given to them from the prince of this world! They wanted the blood of the Anointed. They wanted to kill the Anointed one of God!

They wanted to be rid of Him so they could live as they or as their prince desired them to live without any condemnation of their sins! They wanted to be able to live in their sins and evil ways without restraint!

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

The Apostles were persecuted and even killed. It all started with Stephen, that wonderful spirit filled preacher who preached Jesus and his death to the rulers and it cost him his life!

There were many others who among the Apostles gave their lives for the gospel’s sake! Most all of them did! Burned at stakes, hung on crosses, crucified upside down, etc.

Peter: Crucified upside down!

Andrew, Peter’s brother: Tied to a cross rather than nailed so he would suffer longer. As he hung there he preached to passerby’s for two days before dying.

James, Son of Zebedee: Killed by the sword, (Beheaded)

John: The only disciple who did not die a violent death.

Phillip: Scourged, imprisoned and crucified.

Bartholomew, skinned alive then beheaded.

Thomas: Run through with a spear

Matthew: Stabbed through with a spear.

James, Son of Alphaeus (Leader of Church at Jerusalem) : At the age of 94 was stoned then killed by a blow to the head with a club!

Thaddaeus: According to tradition, Crucified.

Simon the Canaanite AKA the Zealot: Crucified.

Judas the traitor: Hanged himself then as he fell from the tree upon which he was hanged for a couple of days, he burst open and spilled out his internal organs!

When they have done their worst Christ will have a church in the world and that church shall be glorious and triumphant. It is built upon a rock(The knowledge that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God), and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

When the earthly fights against the heavenly, they are always at a disadvantage! Shall the created overcome the creator? I don’t think so! The creator is always at the advantage as He knows the hearts and thoughts of man and as is the case, has all power in heaven and in earth to do as He wills!

V.4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision”.

Derision: Mockery and Ridicule! To make fun of someone and show contempt for them!

Hereby it is clearly intimated,

(1) that the Lord is far above all their malice and power,

(2) that he seeth all their plots, looking down on all;

(3) that he is of omnipotent power, and so can do with his enemies as he lists.

Psalm 115:3 Our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he pleased.”

The Lord isn’t even prompt to arise! He sits and laughs at the folly of the oppressors! They will come to naught and shame!

Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

After the laughter comes the speaking! His word goes out and accomplishes what it is sent to do! What does he speak?

Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

Despite your railings, despite you hatred and preconceived plans, despite your persecution, I have set “My” King upon “My” Holy Hill of Zion!

God in His power has already performed that which the heathen and rulers have tried to prevent! He has already established “His” King on “His” Holy Hill of Zion!

Jesus sits upon the throne of grace, and the throne of power in the midst of his church. In him is Zion’s safeguard; let her citizens be glad in him.

I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

We turn from God speaking to the heathen and rulers to Christ declaring who he is! The Son!

2 Peter 1:17

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Hebrews 1:5

For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee?

A great claim is made here! The Psalmist has prophesied of the Son taking His position in power! He is not speaking of himself but of the Son, Jesus who came in the power and might of the Father, full of grace and truth!

8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession

Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

It was a tradition in the days of the Kings for the Son to ask for a possession when he became of age and the Father would grant lands, wealth, etc to him for his inheritance.

Here the heathen shall fall before the Son and shall be broken like the potter vessel that is burst into pieces and cannot be put to the fire again! When the Son comes in His glory and conquers the nations it will be with a utter conquering! There will be no stone unturned! All will be His for His inheritance.

V 10. It is always a wise thing to take instruction. We can never learn enough about the ways of our God! As he speaks to us may we have ears that hear and eyes that see His ways!

The Psalmist is encouraging the reader to be wise “now” don’t wait until another time. It is always important for the sinner and saint alike to hear the voice of the Lord in the present time and not look to the future! We do not know what the next day will bring forth!

All of the rulers of the world are encourage to look to our God for instruction and if they the mighty and wise need his instruction I would think we would also!

V.11 How important it is to serve the Lord out of a Godly fear and reverence!! To know the love and compassion and to feel His grace is one of the most wonderful things but as we enjoy this we must keep in mind that He is God!

He is the creator and keeper of our souls! He is a great God!! We should come before Him with awe and fear knowing that it is He who has all power in the heavens and the earth!

Isaiah 66:1

Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?

God owns it all!!! To Him it will all return!

He gave it to his first son Adam to rule over and Adam gave it up to satan through sin. The second Son has utterly crushed and destroyed satan and will rule with power and grace and it will be an everlasting Kingdom!

V.12 In verse 7 He is declared to be the Son and we should love and adore Him! Kiss the Son!! Not a kiss as Judas the traitor and all hypocrites do but with the love, adoration, and affection a Son kisses his Father! He is our Savior, King, Captain, Lord, Hope, Grace, He is our everything and without Him we are nothing! “Kiss the Son”!!

Those who refuse to “Kiss the Son” to pay respect and love to Him will be utterly overthrown in His wrath! They will perish and be cast into eternal damnation! Ever dying but never tasting death! What a sad picture of torment!

“Blessed” are they that put their trust in Him! This reminds us of our sermon from Psalms 1, Blessed is the man who,….

Have we put our trust in Him? Have you come to Him in full assurance that He is able to take care of all of your needs? Has He become your hope and joy? Have you trusted Him with the keeping of your soul?

If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ you will be blessed in that day when you see the heathen fall before Him and you are secure in Him. He is our refuge! When others hearts fail, our will be singing with joy and praise to Him who sits on the throne!

Be Blessed my Friends!
