The Holy Spirit, our Spiritual Advisor

What is a Spiritual Advisor?

At some time in our lives, we will all need a spiritual advisor! So, as Christians, we at some time in our Christian walk will need a spiritual adviser. What is a Spiritual Advisor? I suppose if you ask 6 different people you might get 6 different answers

Spiritual Advisor
but I would assume they all would come back to the bottom line of, someone who would give you biblically sound, spiritual guidance! Someone who could help you in your Christian walk and who themselves have been through life situations and can help others who have questions or doubts!

Where can you find a Spiritual Advisor?

This person should be well established in the faith and of a very good reputation and knowledge of the scriptures as they are written not as the worldly church sees them through the traditions of men. . It is a help if they have experienced much of the trials and experience of the Holy Spirit themselves and not just a church member in good standing as the books would reveal but as the Spirit would reveal as standing good in the eyes of the Father!

This is just one definition I have heard! there are many things a spiritual adviser can do and will do to help people, especially those who are new or young Christians! It is even advisable for a young or new Christian to find a spiritual adviser or group of spirit filled Christians to help guide them into the knowledge of Jesus so they can learn to listen to the great teacher, the Holy Spirit.

Christianity is not an easy lifestyle and it requires dedication. Once a commitment has been made then the lifestyle becomes workable and lovable through the Holy Spirit! It truly takes commitment to learn to love God as we should. In order to find a qualified advisor, I would recommend you communicate with the Holy Spirit and and pray for someone to be motivated by the Spirit to help guide you.

The Apostle Paul was the Spiritual Adviser of young Timothy in the bible. He gave Timothy advise on more than one occasion in his letters to him.  He advised young Timothy, “that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do”. (1 Timothy 1:3-4) More advise from Paul to Timothy is in the same chapter, “

“This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:” (1 Timothy 1: 18-19) The second chapter is a long exhortation to Timothy. In chapter 4 we see Paul admonishing Timothy as he instructs “These things command and teach.” after speaking of many things that were needful for the early church. You see, as we communicate the gospel to others we put ourselves in a place of responsibility to live this message we are preaching and this will give us cause to look to the Holy Spirit who gives us guidance and strength!

So, as we can see a mature Christian can be a spiritual adviser but they truly need to have the best interest of the church at heart as Paul did. When I say the church, I mean the born again believers, the body of Christ not the local assembly. All local assemblies are not following Christ. So, we need to be careful who we follow. That is why the Holy Spirit is the ultimate Spiritual Adviser. He will never lead you wrong for he will never testify of himself. There is never an ulterior motive in him.

The Holy Spirit as our Spiritual Advisor!

John 15:25-27

25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. 26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

The best Spiritual Adviser you will ever find is the Holy Spirit. He is the one who truly knows the heart and mind of God and will always testify of Jesus! If someone comes to you in any other name than Jesus, they are teaching false doctrines. If they are promoting themselves instead of Jesus, they are promoting a falsehood! There are all kinds of advise and advisors but we need only to follow the advise that points us to Jesus! We can find the Holy Spirit leading us to Jesus in a personal relationship with him. This is the very thing God desires of us as we come to him, a personal relationship.

I just today received a post from a follower who said her grandmother would go through the house talking to Jesus just like he was there and now that she is an adult she does the same thing! She realizes that Jesus truly is there in her presence. As we are led of the Holy Spirit to speak to, worship and praise Him, his presence magnifies our praises of him. The Holy Spirit is a very important person in the life of a Christian. There are many scriptures throughout the bible that deal with the Holy Spirit and we will write of Him more in this blog, but I am only going to share two of them here.

These two scriptures alone should show how important the Holy Spirit is to us as a spiritual advisor! We as Christians cannot walk a victorious life without the guidance of Him.

1. Ephesians 4:29-31

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

This set of scripture instructs us as to things that will grieve the Holy Spirit such as, corrupt communication, bitterness, wrath, anger, glamour, and evil speaking, but also informs us what or who he is also! Verse 30 says, “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”

He is our seal or mark of ownership! A seal was a token or mark that kings and rulers put on important documents or things or high priority to show that these belonged to the King or ruler! So, the Holy Spirit is the mark upon or within a Christian to show who he or she belongs to!

Without the spirit we do not belong to God in the sense of born again Christians! We are not considered his without him, the Holy Spirit. By the use of the word “seal” in this verse it shows how much importance God puts on us as his children! He wants the world to know, we belong to him!

2. John 16:12-14

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

These verses are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ instruction us that the Holy Spirit is to be our Spiritual Adviser. Jesus said, when the Holy Spirit (Spirit of Truth) comes he will speak the things that he has heard and not of himself. He will also “guide” the believer into all truth! The truth is Jesus and his nature. The scripture teaches us that Jesus is the truth and the life! The truth of who God is was manifest in his dear Son Jesus!

It is imperative to follow the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that “Ye must be born again” When Nichodemus being confused ask Jesus, how can a man after he is old enter into his mothers womb again, Jesus explained that, that which is born of the flesh is flesh but that which is born of the spirit is spirit! So, there must be a new birth to be able to have him  to be our guide as he must live in us!

The scripture speaks of the kingdom of heaven being in the believer. This can only be true if you have someone inside that is from the kingdom of heaven! This is possible by the spirit of truth working in the believer. He is sent from the father above and he will guide or lead us into all truth if we follow his teachings.

The Holy Spirit is truly the only qualified Spiritual Advisor to lead us into the truth of who God is and the relationship he desires with us. As we grow in our faith and as we progress as children of God we will have many advisors along the journey. There will be Teachers, Counselors, Helpers and Ministers and there will be many of them who are seeking to love God more and more. These people will give you their best and will be of great service to you even as Paul was to Timothy.

By being patient you will learn that the most grateful and gracious servants make the most grateful and gracious advisors. In order to be a gracious and grateful advisor, you must first learn to be one as a servant. This is just one of many lessons the Holy spirit has taught me in my Christian walk. You will experience many lessons as you follow him. There are many people with a wonderful heart after God and they can help guide us as new Christians and give us encouragement in our walk, but in the end, we must learn to trust in the Spirit of Truth, which is the Holy Spirit.

May you endeavor to be led of the Spirit of Truth! May he become your most cherished Spiritual Advisor!

Be Blessed my friend!
