The Fruit of Long suffering
When we think about longsuffering many of us envision a time of great pain or aggravation but there can be many things involved.
To be longsuffering, we have to have the love of the other person in mind and their needs will outweigh our own. This was how Jesus operated and the disciples as well.
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
The fourth spiritual fruit is longsuffering. This is mentioned as an attribute of our Father, God! He has been longsuffering with the world since the beginning when Adam sinned.
The word longsuffering in the Greek is from the same as (makrothumos); longanimity, i.e. (objective) forbearance or (subjective) fortitude :- longsuffering, patience.
Strong’s Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.
Just after Moses had gotten mad and broke the tablets, God told him to hew out another set and to come up to the mount. In this discourse, God proclaimed Himself to Moses.
5 And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.
6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
Here the Lord God Himself proclaims that He is longsuffering. It is obvious in that He is allowing Moses to write a new set of laws (commandments).
Another example in scripture of this being an attribute of God is found in Romans 2:4 (KJV)
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
This teaches us that God’s longsuffering is intended to lead us to repentance but as has been the case for so many generations, man has mistaken this longsuffering for neglect or not caring. Because of God’s longsuffering people have come to think God is not going to punish them. They misunderstand His longsuffering.
Longsuffering goes hand in hand with patience. When we are walking in the Spirit He gives His longsuffering to us. He enables us to walk in this manner.
Since longsuffering is an attribute of God, it has become an attribute of a Christian. This is just another part of the Holy Spirit. Every fruit we mention in these articles are attributes or God. Whether it be Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness or Temperance. They are all attributes of the Spirit within us.
Paul exhorts the Ephesians to be longsuffering.
Ephesians 4:1-3 (KJV)
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Again in Colossae Paul exhorts the church to be longsuffering with each other.
Colossians 1:11 (KJV)
11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
We are strengthened by His Spirit to be longsuffering.
Ephesians 5:1 (KJV)
1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
In this last passage of scripture we are told to be followers of God! The word followers in the Greek is mimeomai); an imitator :- follower.
Strong’s Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.
So, if we are going to imitate God the Father, we will be longsuffering also. It is certainly a part of our new DNA as Christians
