Hebrews Chapter:1 The Person of The Son!

The Person of Jesus

Introduction to Hebrews:

In order for us to understand what the writer is trying to communicate to the Hebrews and to get better understanding of the person of the Son, we must first establish this writing is to Jews and not Gentiles.

This letter was pinned to a group of people who were raised under the Law of Ordinances and were having to forsake a religious system they had been raised in! Moses was their Prophet and they claimed Abraham for their Father. If people claimed in that day that someone were greater than Moses or Abraham, they would have considered it blasphemy!  The Gospels confirm this!

I am not saying there is not a lot for anyone to take away from this letter but it was not pinned to the Gentiles. Many of the teachings of this letter are profitable for us all, whether Jew or Gentile!

If we rightly discern by the Holy Spirit, God's word is profitable for all.

This book holds a lot of the types and shadows of Christ in it and they refer back to the Old Testament.  It needs to be read with patience and prayer for proper understanding.

A quote from William R. Newell: " The great object of Hebrews, then, is to set before these believers eyes CHRIST, the Son of God; the son of Man; the Great High Priest in Heaven; and to cause them constantly to occupy their thought and worship with God, into Whose presence Christ by His blood has brought them: Without the camp: WITHIN THE VEIL!"

The Person of Jesus

Hebrews 1 (KJV)

1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

God speaking to anyone by a Son would have been a very strange thing to any Hebrew who was a servant of the Law of Ordinances. This is the great message of this letter, it sets forth the Son!

God has spoken to us! How has He chosen to do this in this last age? Not through the Old Testament Prophets but through a Person, a Son!  This Son is declared to be God, Creator, Upholder, Lord and Heir of all things!

In the gospel of Matthew, we see Him as the King of Israel! In Mark's writing, we see him as the Servant of God! I In Luke's writings we see him as, the Son of Man! In john's writing (The Gospel) we see him as the Eternal Word, the Only Begotten Son of God, the Creator, God himself!

So, we see in the Old Testament, God spoke to us in his Prophets but in the end of this age, He has spoken to us through his Son! In this, the image of God was manifest!

Let's not miss the opening verse, GOD HAS SPOKEN! The creator of Heaven and Earth has spoken! He has declared that His message has come through his Beloved Son!

The time of the Law and Prophets were fast coming to an end!

God has spoken! Atheist, the fools they are, deny there is a God! Let us not forget the scripture, Psalm 14:1The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. The Deists say God has not spoken nor revealed himself! The masses of humanity go about their business daily ignoring him! They live their lives as though no God exist and they will be shocked in the great and dreadful day of the Lord, when they hear him say, "Depart from Me"!

You must hear Him! The message from the beginning has been to "hear the Lord". Hear oh Israel, Hear My words! Hear and your soul shall live!  God has spoken and we need to hear what he has to say in this letter to the Hebrews!

Revelation of the Old

These words say a great deal if we just listen to them! "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets"  This is how God revealed himself to the people in the Old Testament, through prophets. This era of prophets pretty much began right after Abraham and ran through Malachi.  At one time God was willing to reveal himself to the Israelites but they refused.  Remember, this book or letter is written to Hebrews, Jewish people, not Gentiles.

How did God speak to them in divers manners or in multiple ways? Dreams, vision, angels, legal ordinances, books, many, many different ways including Proverbs!

Something that we need revealed to us about the old is that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, or the Fathers as they are many time referred to, do not belong to Gentiles in the sense that they are the fathers of Israel. Israel does not belong to us nor are we descendants of it.

We can correctly assume that Abraham is the Father of us all if we are born again Christians as he is the Father of Faith! Rom 4:16, Gal 3:29 "If ye are Christ's then are you Abrahams seed, heirs according to the promise "

It is my opinion that Israel has not been in good standing with God since they rejected His Son Jesus! God was manifest to that nation through the Messiah and they spat on him and crucified him! They rejected God in the person of His Son!

The nation Israel still tries to worship God through the law and prophets of old! They are still Nation full of Idolatry!  God still loves them but they are not in my opinion in His favor.

Verse 2: Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

I find it amazing that after man refused to have God come dwell among them that He still spoke to them. He chose to speak through dust and ashes!  That is all we are, dust and ashes! From the dust we were made and to the dust we will return! Yet, God in His infinite plan chose to speak through man!

All of this was done to prepare men for a more glorious and wonderful plan, that God would in the end of the ages, speak to us through the person of his Son!

This letter or book, in it's entirety is about the Son from his incarnation and forward. It's all about the person of the Son!

The Gospel of John reveals the eternal Sonship of Jesus in the opening chapter,

John 1  (KJV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

All of this took place before God revealed Himself in the Son. The prophets spoke all throughout the Old Testament up until God spoke to us in (the person of His) Son!

Not just a Son but the Son!  The very image of the Father, God! Oh, if we can only grasp this!

This is not just the Son speaking, but God, speaking through Him!  God, speaking to man yet again!  He came to Israel once in the early days to reveal Himself and they refused! Here God comes to them yet again in the person of His son to speak!  God has gone far beyond speaking by divers manners and ways by coming to man Himself! No more prophets, dreams, Proverbs, the one these all spoke of has now come, God in the flesh!

Look closely to this letter. The Son is not speaking to us in this letter, but God!  God speaks and the Son appears! In Hebrews God does not say, "This is my beloved son, hear ye Him! He simply puts it, "here is my beloved Son, hear ye Me! This word comes to man after the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of our Lord!

In the letter to the Hebrews, God speaks concerning the person of his Son!

The Person of the Son declared!

At the very start of this book or letter to the Hebrews we see an entirely different message from any other in the Old Testament!

The Son is set forth in his divine Glory, Heir of all things, God, Lord, Creator, Upholder of all, the very Son of man! In suffering and death, man. In honor and glory, God!

No one was ever applauded by God Himself in the Old Testament like the Son is in the Book of Hebrews! Never was there one who received honor in this manner from God Himself! Esteemed as the very image of the Father!

Men called Jesus the Great Teacher! God calls him, The Son! Men termed Him a prophet, God calls him The Son! This is the life of God to men!

1 John 5: 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

To every believer, there comes a time when the Spirit of God reveals or speaks of Christ to our hearts! When God reveals Christ to us, he is much more than a mere teacher or prophet, he is become the Life, the Eternal Gift, the very voice of the Father Himself to us!  Once The Son has been revealed and believed upon, it is an easy thing to understand, God hath spoken to us in the person of his Son!

The person of the Son is revealed to us throughout the entirety of scripture. In Gen. 3:15 He is the seed of woman who would bruise the head of Satan. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (God with us).

Next, the announcement of the birth, The Angels, God's messengers come to Mary, Luke 1: 35, And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Next, The Father sends the Heavenly Host to proclaim his birth, crying out, Glory to God in the highest! The wise men see his star and travel many miles upon the backs of camels to worship and proclaim his glory and honor!  At the river Jordan, God proclaims, "This is my beloved Son, hear ye him"!

His entire life of obedience to the Father, accepting the cup of wrath the Father appointed him, laying down his own life, his final words as the Son of man, "Father into thy hands I commend my spirit"! Next, in john 20: 17, the resurrection and message to Mary Magdalene and the others, "Go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend unto My Father and your Father, and My God and your God"!

I know it is a easy thing to look to this wonderful book with expectations to hear from the Son, but it is not the Son who speaks here, but God who speaks of His Son! God has spoken to us in His Son! The Son is forever set before us in this wonderful book! From the very beginning throughout the end, we see him forever at Gods right hand!

He is seen and revealed by the Holy Spirit to us as eternal deity, his humanity is revealed in his Priesthood ever at the righthand of the Father making intercession for us! He is now over the house of God as Son and no longer a servant of man! Greater than the angels, and greater than any on earth before or after him in the flesh! He is forever "before the face of God for us". A Priest, seated, His one offering accepted of God, bringing redemption forever to mankind! By his work on the cross, He has become a "Great High Priest", able to be "touched with the feelings of our infirmities." For He was, "in all points tempted like we are", without sin or apart from sin!

Now, God has spoken to us in His Son!

This is nothing like the voice the Israelites heard at Sinai, when there was thunder, rumblings, fire and smoke to bring great fear upon them to bring them near death from fear! These words in Hebrews are not words written upon stones and ordinances given that cannot be kept! All these words written on stones were given to Israel through a servant, Moses! These all came through an earthly mediator!

This is God speaking to us in His dear Son!  Coming near to us as he desired to do to Israel in the dessert! This is the only begotten of the Father, Jesus, the Christ, "the same yesterday, and today, and forever". These words are not earthly but heavenly and spiritual, they are the life of man!

     What has God declared here?

  1. Jesus, The Son has been declared the Heir of all things!
  2. The worlds have been made by the Son!
  3. The very image of God's glory!
  4. The very image of God's person!
  5. Upholding all things by the power of His word!
  6. He made purification for sin!
  7. He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high!

The Son - Heir of all things, through whom God created the ages, or worlds!

Colossians 1:16-17

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Let there be light, the words of Christ spoke as darkness was over the earth! It was his voice that brought light into the darkness and caused it to flee!

As we look around us, the clothes we wear, the air we breath, the auto's we drive, the food we gather from our gardens, he has prepared them all for us from his creation! The mountains, the oceans, the heavens, the clouds , all by his voice!  Let there be firmament! Look at the clouds, they are his chariot! The clouds received him at his ascension as he passed through them far above all heavens, into the heaven of heavens where the Father dwells!

The Son is the Heir of it all, it is his! He made and created it all for his divine purpose!

There are those who reject his though of the Son as Heir of all things and upholding it all by the word of his power. They say man has some stake in all this. Man has populated the earth and therefore he should have some stake in how it all works!

May I remind us here, we have created nothing but what we received from God! What did we bring into this world with us? Naked we came and naked we will return! Made of the dust of the earth and we will return to it! How long can you live without breathing the very air that God provides? Your very heartbeat depends upon the creator of all things!

The very one you depend upon for your life and wellbeing has spoken in His Son, Jesus! Hear the voice of the Father, God!

What doe it mean that Christ is God's Heir to all?

  • This is an eternal thing that will never change! Christ as Heir of all things forever!
  • Man even declares that the heir is the executor of all the estate passed to him. The ruler and director until his death! Christ is the Heir for eternity for He is from everlasting to everlasting, there is no end to his existence as is with man!
  • A selfless Priest who at Gethsemane could have called for the angels to come deliver him but he chose to drink the cup of wrath for us in selflessness! Unlike the masses who inherit fortunes and squander them for themselves, Christ has chosen to share his with us, calling us brethren! What a safe place to find ourselves, in the one who refused deliverance because of his devotion to the Father and love for us!
  • We have become heirs with him, not just heirs but joint heirs! God manifest in the flesh to bring us to Him! To give us all things through Christ! My mind can hardly comprehend this, the sacrifice made so I can become righteous in the Fathers eyes to eternal heirship through the Son, heir of all things!
  • Joint heirs, delivered from the darkness of the world to be brought into the light of the Son! Made to become children of God! Even the Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we have become the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint heirs with christ; Rom 8:16-17. Then Gal 4:7, we are no longer bondservants but a son and if a son, then an heir through God!

I am thinking the Apostle Paul pretty much summed up every mans biography when he wrote, "we brought nothing into this world and we will take nothing out!

All kinds of men have found wealth in this world, kings, princes, successful business men and women, heirs of fortunes, etc. It never changes though, they all leave it behind for someone else to either take care of of squander! They never take it with them! They achieve all this and many times work their entire lives to keep and maintain it but yet miss our on becoming an heir and joint heir of all things!

We see the poor of this world who is looked upon with disdain by the upperclass who seem to have it all! They are ignored, slighted, lied to, despised, cast away, even killed at times because they have no place in the schemes and workings of the wealthy! They are a burden, a stain, a foul odor in the nostrils of the worldly leaders!

Many of these wealthy people die, not knowing the son, they are cast out into an eternity without God, forever tormented! Many of the poor die having accepted the redemption offer them through the Son! When they die, they are welcomed by Him with whom they have to do! They have now received the heirship that has been theirs since they accepted the Person of the Son and his word, prepared for them from the foundation of the worlds! What is your inheritance?

Let us stop here for just a few minutes and raise our hands and give thanks and praise and worship to him with whom we have to do for all his glorious works he had done for us......... Hallelujah, that was wonderful!

The Person of Christ

The Person of Christ, The Creator of All Things

In verse 2 we read, "by whom also he made the worlds", or created the ages or all things!  The opening verse of all scripture is, "In the beginning God, created the heavens and the earth". Jesus said, "I and the Father are one"! He also proclaimed to the Leaders of Israel,"If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me."

John 1 proclaims,

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

All things were made by or through Him!

     In further reading we find:

Colossians 1

16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

In Him,... through Him,.... unto Him! Or we may say, in view of Him, through His direct action and with respect to his honor and glory!

Verse 3. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

The first thing we are reminded of here, John 1: 18 No man hath seen God at  any time; the only begotten Son, Who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.  He is the word by who God is declared to us!  The proclamation made that Christ is the brightness of his glory has been interpreted by one writer as "effulgence" meaning: brightness taken to the extreme. You may be dazzled by it, stunned by it, or even overcome by it. Usually used to refer to the sun or some other mega-star. In the writers definition it pertains to the brightness of Christ!

When revealed, we should be dazzled, stunned and overcome by His glory! All that God is, is expressed in the Son! We can never really grasp who the Son is until we have lain ourselves out before Him and come to understand as Paul expresses in Romans 9:5, , He is God over all blessed forever!

I wish there was some way I could make folks understand this! To come to the place where the Person of the Son is exalted as God! Where his glory would overcome us all that we would bow before him and accept this truth! God, the creator has spoken in this letter and laid the creation of all things at the feet of the Son! Life, and existence belong to Him! All things are His!

Then comes, "the express image of his person".  Or as Newell put it, " the exact -expression of His substance". This might help us in the understanding a little bit more.  Christ, all that God is in every aspect! The word "image" in this verse is taken from the term meaning, engraving or carving, implying the exact impression of something or someone.

I believe this person or substance relates to the deity of God and this express image or exact impression is what the man, Christ Jesus truly is!

Next we have, "and upholding all things by the word of his power". We can say "maintaining" here for upholding.  The creator of heaven and earth is certainly the maintainer of all the ages! He is the sustainer of all things!

There are so many man made terms and notions that have been taught that it has become blasphemous to even consider them! The term law of nature! The laws of being, These all include gravity and many other such terms!  In light of all this we must look at the truth, "upholding all things by the word of his power". There are no laws involved in this! Christ maintains everything!  He maintains and keeps it by the word of His power

There are no laws outside the maintainer of the heavens and the earth! Man was given instructions in the beginning to do specific things but he was never told that he could uphold or maintain them, this was never nor has ever been implied anywhere in the scripture.

Actually the scripture teaches just the opposite:

1. God speaking to Belshazzar in Daniel 5: 3, "the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways"....

2. Paul and Barnabas in Acts 17: 28 "For in him we live , and move, and have our being;".

3. Acts 17: 25 "he giveth to all life , and breath, and all things;".

4. Job 12: 10 "In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind".

Man isn't the only thing Christ upholds or maintains, every creature and every thing that He created is maintained by Him with whom we have to do!

Look at the implication in Job 12: 10, God implies by telling Jonah that he had compassion on a gourd that he had not worked for, not made it grow, that He, God was the upholder of the gourd!

Every living creature and all living substance upon the earth, Christ is the upholder or maintainer of!  There are no laws of nature at work making keeping or creating anything! Christ is all and in all!  Saints of God declare this with joy looking for the end or reveling of their salvation in Him who is the upholder and maintainer of all!

There were no laws of nature when God said, "let there be light"  When God created the heavens and the earth, there was nothing! In Him, are all things made and maintained!  By faith we understand that the worlds have been framed by His word! By faith we understand that what is seen (every thing in this visible universe) has not been made out of thing that we see but by the Word of His power!

People of simple faith, Saints, they believe this! For there really is no other faith. In Jesus own words, except ye become as little children....!

In the beginning His word created and upheld the universe as we know it. His word of power still maintains or upholds it in the day we are living! What a glorious thought, we are upheld or maintained by the creator of Heaven and earth! Glorious when we meditate upon this isn't it?

Too many times people want to put Christ in a number 2 position somehow making him less than God!  In doing this, they reject the deity of Christ! There is no such thing as 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the deity of God! God is spirit and He is all and in all! I do not claim to understand it, I just trust Him in it!

This statement, I and my Father are one, brought great distress to the Jews! They fully understood the implications of this sentence! These are the things that made them seek to kill him! They proclaimed, he has made Himself as God!  He didn't make himself as God, He was and is God!

I can only hope that we can come to the place that we understand that this word in the beginning that uttered, let there be light" still maintains all things today! Simple faith, what a wonderful thing!

This word of power is a continual thought throughout our Lords ministry! He truly is the same yesterday, today and forever! We see Him casting out devils by His word! Jesus "said" (His word) to the leper, I will be thou clean and he leaped to his feet!  As the coffin passed by Jesus stopped it and "said", young man arise! To Lazarus who was lying in the tomb wrapped in grave clothes, Jesus "said" Lazarus, come forth! The dead come alive, the sick are healed, all things are maintained by the word of His power! The centurion whose faith allowed healing for his servant, says, "only say the word and my servant shall be healed".

Lets look to the Psalms, Chapter 119: 90-91Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.

There are no ordinances that leave out the upholding or maintaining by the power that is exercised by our Lord Jesus Christ! Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. In this "all things consist", there is the meaning that all things are held together by him (Christ)!

As we think about this, there are thousands and thousands of His saints at this very moment coming before him in prayer and He, by the power of His word, is able to maintain and uphold each as He is God and there is no limit to his power.

" When he had by himself purged our sins"  In this text, the term purge has the same meaning as purification. To purge, you remove, get rid of something or some element of an undesirable thing!  Remember, He was exalted above his brethren because he hated sin and loved righteousness! Jesus purged, purified us from sin.

In this short statement the entire work of the cross is held!  An entire volume of books could be written on this subject and probably has been!  Jesus through this purging or purification, not only brought propitiation and remission of sin for us but also removed sin from God's sight in the believer!  When we read, The Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world, we see this very clearly!

Through this wonderful work of Christ on the cross, God pardons the sins of each believer and by this work brings in a new creature in Jesus!  Where once sin resided and dwelt, now righteous has found a new home!

This will as we see with many other scriptures in Hebrews lay a foundation to reveal the priestly work of Christ!

"sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high" Has this been etched into your heart, has this image become a reality to you through your faith in the Person of the Son of God? This position that the Son has taken?  This believing of this verse will separate the goats from the sheep! This is as much a part of the salvation faith as John 3:16 or any other verse about God's love for mankind!

Sat down . . . Majesty . . . on High!  Consider the greatness of these words! Christ is indeed a seated Priest through a completed work! Ah, this is where we find Him now, in his priestly work in the heaven of heavens! In his majesty!  Majesty, meaning "greatness" and is used in scripture only as the majesty and greatness of God!

     Hebrews 8: 1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

Jude 25 To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

II Samuel 7: 22 Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

Palms 145: 3, 6 Great is the Lord , and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. - 6,  And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.

1 Chronicles 29:11  Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord , and thou art exalted as head above all.

I pray we could all be brought into this conscious thought repeatedly, "There is no other GREATNESS"!

Christ alone is in all and above all!

Before we conclude this part of Hebrews Chapter 1, I would like to bring your attention to these scriptures that deal with the Priesthood of Christ.

Christ in His priesthood is mentioned 4 times throughout the book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 1: 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

Hebrews 8: 1-2 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;  2. A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man

Hebrews 10: 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

Hebrews 12: 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

MEditation on these 4 scriptures will no doubt bring edification to ones heart and mind! Jesus, our Great High Priest forever!
