First, lets define wrath!
Definition of Wrath taken from Merriam Webster
1 : strong vengeful anger or indignation
2 : retributory punishment for an offense or a crime : divine chastisement
Luke 3: 7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
John upon his coming out of the wilderness began to tell the religious leaders that they were heading for wrath. Why was this?
From the beginning, God has honored faith and obedience. Remember what Samuel told Saul? “Obedience is better than sacrifice and to harken than the fat of rams”.
God has always honored faith and obedience. Abraham, when told to get up and leave his land to go to a land God would show him, got up and left and followed Gods words. Abraham has since been referred to as, “the friend of God”.
The people whom John was instructing had become very religious and had actually even added their one instructions to the Law of Ordinances making it even harder to follow.
Remember Jesus words about them, Matthew 23: 4, For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
These are the people who was coming to John to be baptized and he knew them for who they were! Vipers!
John warned them that they had been told to flee the wrath of God that was going to come upon all those who were disobedient to his words.
This has been completely omitted from our modern day churches. In telling everyone how much god loves them, they have left out the wrath coming upon the children of disobedience.
Truly, it was the Father’s love that drew me and has caused me to love him more and more as I have grown in grace and understanding of him. His love is so wonderful! His mercy never fails! His grace is more than efficient for us! All these wonderful things are so real to me! I am a testimony of them all! God is love and he that is born of god is born of love!
The thing that we fail to relay is that the wrath of God is being held in reserve for judgement against ungodly and perverse men!
14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.
Does this sound like a walk in the park to you? Does this sound like day of rejoicing? Does this sound like a day filled with wonderful emotions? No, no, no, this is a day of great judgement when the Lord will cast those ungodly out into everlasting punishment!
Why would anyone neglect such a truth as this? How can one fail to warn the people to flee the wrath of God in the end of time?
How could anyone do this? It is a simple answer! They only care about themselves and their own wealth and wellbeing!
Let me share with you some of the scripture about the wrath of God! I don’t worry about His wrath for my part, I am a child who love him and he is my Lord and King! I am his child and his children will escape the wrath to come! Hallelujah! Oh how wonderful to be His child!
Scriptures on wrath:
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
I can’t find anything in these verses that would bring any assurance of comfort to those who deny the Son of God. To those who purposefully twist the scriptures to their benefit. To those who willfully mislead the simple for their own gain!
I do see great warnings here that men should flee this great wrath of God that is coming!
Please, please search the scriptures. Look again at the scripture above in Ephesians 5:6. People are misled by the false teachings and traditions of men and they end up being disobedient to the words of our Lord and in the end, the wrath of Almighty God will be revealed against them!
The word “vain” in this scripture above literally means words with no substance of biblical conviction, or empty words.
